Highway landscaping and turf maintenanceTurf maintenance for highway (road and motorway) roundabouts, grass verges, central reservations and traffic islands is costly and can inconvenience motorists on account of highway lane closures. The passing traffic can also raise safety concerns for maintenance workers who are busy cutting the turf. Embankments pose another safety risk as mowing these areas can result in injury and the alternative of using a grass trimmer is time intensive. If the turf maintenance is neglected, the overgrown grass and weeds can be a hazard for passing motorists. During dry or cold spells in the year, it is also possible for the turf to turn brown or become patchy and have a bad appearance. The solution to all of these problems is artificial turf.

Highway Maintenance with Artificial Turf

Artificial turf requires almost no maintenance. It is important to annually inspect the turf to ensure the seams have not come unstuck but this is unlikely to happen unless the area has received high usage (such as pedestrians regularly walking over the artificial turf or cars driving over the artificial turf). This low maintenance solution will save on labour and administration costs as the roundabouts, grass verges, central reservations and traffic islands can be left for long periods of time without any deterioration.

Many government agencies are also including artificial turf as part of their regeneration schemes. Not only does it save on costs but it also provides a year-round green landscape that is visually appealing.

Although green is the obvious choice for artificial turf, it is available in a variety of colours. The most extravagant use of colour we have seen is a roundabout with pink artificial turf in Cyprus. This was used outside a group of hotels to transform the area into a small landmark – everyone is talking about the pink roundabout!

Consider how artificial turf can be used near the roads in your area. It will save your maintenance budget and is a feature that will be appreciated by motorists.
